OPERADS AND JET MODULES

2005

Let $A$ be an algebra over an operad in a cocomplete closed symmetric monoidal category. We study the category of $A$-modules. We define certain symmetric product functors of such modules generalising the tensor product of modules over commutative algebras, which we use to define the notion of a jet module. This in turn generalises the notion of a jet module over a module over a classical commutative algebra. We are able to define Atiyah classes (i.e. obstructions to the existence of connections) in this generalised context. We use certain model structures on the category of $A$-modules to study the properties of these Atiyah classes. The purpose of the paper is not to present any really de…

Obstruction theory in action accessible categories

2013

Abstract We show that, in semi-abelian action accessible categories (such as the categories of groups, Lie algebras, rings, associative algebras and Poisson algebras), the obstruction to the existence of extensions is classified by the second cohomology group in the sense of Bourn. Moreover, we describe explicitly the obstruction to the existence of extensions in the case of Leibniz algebras, comparing Bourn cohomology with Loday–Pirashvili cohomology of Leibniz algebras.

The module structure of Hochschild homology in some examples

2008

Abstract In this Note we give a simple proof of a conjecture by A. Caldararu stating the compatibility between the modified Hochschild–Kostant–Rosenberg isomorphism and the action of Hochschild cohomology on Hochschild homology in the case of Calabi–Yau manifolds and smooth projective curves. Browder's theorems through localized SVEP

2005

A bounded linear operator T ∈ L(X) on aBanach space X is said to satisfy “Browder’s theorem” if the Browder spectrum coincides with the Weyl spectrum. T ∈ L(X) is said to satisfy “a-Browder’s theorem” if the upper semi-Browder spectrum coincides with the approximate point Weyl spectrum. In this note we give several characterizations of operators satisfying these theorems. Most of these characterizations are obtained by using a localized version of the single-valued extension property of T. In the last part we shall give some characterizations of operators for which “Weyl’s theorem” holds.

On the construction of lusternik-schnirelmann critical values with application to bifurcation problems

L 2-topological invariants of 3-manifolds

1995

We give results on theL2-Betti numbers and Novikov-Shubin invariants of compact manifolds, especially 3-manifolds. We first study the Betti numbers and Novikov-Shubin invariants of a chain complex of Hilbert modules over a finite von Neumann algebra. We establish inequalities among the Novikov-Shubin invariants of the terms in a short exact sequence of chain complexes. Our algebraic results, along with some analytic results on geometric 3-manifolds, are used to compute theL2-Betti numbers of compact 3-manifolds which satisfy a weak form of the geometrization conjecture, and to compute or estimate their Novikov-Shubin invariants.

Butterflies in a Semi-Abelian Context

2011

It is known that monoidal functors between internal groupoids in the category Grp of groups constitute the bicategory of fractions of the 2-category Grpd(Grp) of internal groupoids, internal functors and internal natural transformations in Grp, with respect to weak equivalences (that is, internal functors which are internally fully faithful and essentially surjective on objects). Monoidal functors can be equivalently described by a kind of weak morphisms introduced by B. Noohi under the name of butterflies. In order to internalize monoidal functors in a wide context, we introduce the notion of internal butterflies between internal crossed modules in a semi-abelian category C, and we show th…

Homotopy limits for 2-categories

2008

AbstractWe study homotopy limits for 2-categories using the theory of Quillen model categories. In order to do so, we establish the existence of projective and injective model structures on diagram 2-categories. Using these results, we describe the homotopical behaviour not only of conical limits but also of weighted limits. Finally, pseudo-limits are related to homotopy limits.

Double adjunctions and free monads

2011

We characterize double adjunctions in terms of presheaves and universal squares, and then apply these characterizations to free monads and Eilenberg--Moore objects in double categories. We improve upon our earlier result in "Monads in Double Categories", JPAA 215:6, pages 1174-1197, 2011, to conclude: if a double category with cofolding admits the construction of free monads in its horizontal 2-category, then it also admits the construction of free monads as a double category. We also prove that a double category admits Eilenberg--Moore objects if and only if a certain parameterized presheaf is representable. Along the way, we develop parameterized presheaves on double categories and prove …
